The Three Images from Ink-wash Painting

for Chamber Ensemble of 17 Players

The composition depicts the artistic conception and spice which was apperceived from Chinese traditional painting with delicate rhythmical arrangement and exquisite diversification of harmony and sound colors. Meanwhile, it explores the expression of the way of lingering charm that is being in Chinese culture more effectively with the Western musical formulation and instrumentations.

The composition contains three movements, but performed without intermission. These three movements separately derived from traditional Chinese painting forms and notions. There are‘Gong Bi’- subtly line and point drawing,‘Jin Ran’- delicate dip-dye diversification style and‘Po Mo’-pure impression and artistic conception describing without any idiographic scenery.

This composition is commissioned by the New Juilliard Ensemble for its special concert for the Juilliard Centennial and it is sponsored by Asian Cultural Council and Guggenheim Foundation.
