vSAN architecture

VMware vSAN architecture has several concepts, but the basics are the following:

  • Disk groups: Already described in the Creating disk groups section.
  • vSAN datastore: The datastore provided by vSAN and backed by the aggregate storage of all the host's disk groups. Note that there can be a single vSAN datastore in a vSAN cluster.
  • VM Storage policy: Determines the component placement and provisioning and redundancy.
  • Failures To Tolerate (FTT): Number of hosts, disk, or network failures a VM object can tolerate.
