1.Daily Greetings

(1)Chance Meeting

John:Hello,Kate!Fancy meeting you here!Working again,are you?

Kate:Yes,I've got to,if I want to pass all of the exams.

John:How are you getting along, then? All right?

Kate:Yes,not too bad, thanks. I'm a bit fed up revising though. How about you?

John:Pretty good, thanks. My exams are over now,so I can afford to relax a bit. I'm going to a football match this afternoon. It's terrible weather, though. I hope it doesn't rain.

Kate:Yeah,awful. By the way,how's Jane?

John:Oh,she's all right—busy as usual. Well,I'd better be going,I suppose. The match starts at 3:30. Bye!

(2)Neighbours

Boy:Hi. I'm your new neighbour,Garry Fields. I live next door.

Girl:Oh,hi. I'm Lisa Stephens.

Boy:So,you just moved in?Do you need anything?

Girl:Not right now. But thanks.

Boy:Well, let me know if you do. Um,by the way, would you mind turning your stereo down? The walls are really thin,so the sound goes right through to my apartment.

Girl:Oh,I'm sorry! I didn't realise that. I'll make sure to keep the volume down. Um,by the way,is there a good Italian restaurant in the neighbourhood?

Boy:Yeah. There's a great one a couple of blocks from here. Try their lasagna. It's delicious!

(3)Party

Peter:My name is Peter. What's your name?

Jane:My name is Jane. Nice to meet you.

Peter:It's a pleasure. This is a great party!

Jane:Yes,it is. Where are you from?

Peter:I'm from Amsterdam.

Jane:Amsterdam?Really,are you German?

Peter:No,I'm not German. I'm Dutch.

Jane:Oh,you're Dutch. Sorry about that.

Peter:That's OK. Where are you from?

Jane:I'm from London,but I'm not British.

Peter:No,what are you?

Jane:Well,my parents were Spanish,so I'm Spanish,too.

Peter:That's very interesting. Spain is a beautiful country.

Jane:Thank you. It is a wonderful place.
