Serving the Country Wholeheartedly
Li Dui, the minister of Zhao State, had a premonition that the two princes of King Huiwen of Zhao would start an internal strife for the throne. Prince Zhao Zhang and his subordinate Tian Buli were arrogant and had strong military strength. They might fight regardless of the benefit and the calamity.
He therefore advised the Prime Minister Fei Yi to ask a sickness leave and let Prince Chen to conduct the public affairs.
Fei Yi did not agree and said,“I have promised earlier and I must remain true to my commitment. How could I only consider preserving my body? Faithful officials will unfold their good conducts in face of disaster and loyal officials will show their virtues in face of catastrophes.
We often use this idiom to indicate people's faith and loyalty toward their country and nation.
It tells us that we must be ready to contribute ourselves to our motherland and its people whenever we are needed.
